The processing folk art on the dolls is - Burnt Wood - which
is back again with highly advanced techniques. Matroshka dolls are made of wood from lime, balsa, alder, aspen alder, and birch trees; lime is probably the most common wood type. These woods share softness, light weight, and fine grain texture. The timber of lime trees is soft, easily worked, and has very little grain. metre. It is a popular wood for model building and intricate carving. I have to share a story which has nothing to do with the Matroshka Dolls but with the linden trees. On my first visit to Western Ukraine in 1989 one of my cousins made me tea from a mixture of herbs, one of them being the lime scented blossoms of the Linden tree. Later I have brought back many satchels of linden blossoms. And then I found the trees growing down my street. A cliché - it's a small world after all. The linden blossoms have many medicinal properties. |
