The Magical Power of Embroidery

Ever wonder why all the linen pieces are embroidered at the edges? Dr. Natalie Kononenko, a folklorist  and a professor at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
comments on the magic power of embroidery and notes that embroidery around the edges of clothing
 - look at my Shirts pages or the Blouse pages, - serves as a protective function (usually from the evil eye)
on the person, in the home and so on.  You will notice that  on  the blouses edges of cuffs of  sleeves
and  necklines are all embroidered - simple as it may be - but they are embroidered.

The fabric used for the Ukrainian embroidered linens is Aida cloth - similar to a basketweave or also known as evenweaves. Embroidery techniques used by Ukrainian women are mainly cross-stitch. This stitch is used in several variations especially in peasant embroideriesTheir is a  reason why on the small linen squares  the designs are embroidered only in one corner.  In Ukraine in their china cabinets, the linen squares are displayed diagonally on the shelf so that the embroidered part hangs down. The corner that is not embroidered rests on the shelf covered with a piece of chinaware. The linens are very easy to care for: wash in warm soapy water, rinse and hang to dry. You may iron while damp, watch the setting; use spray starch for the small linens if you so desire.
