Matroshka Dolls -or Nesting Dolls are made out of wood - have a long history, originated in Russia. They
are an ancient hand carved and hand painted art of about 1000 years old. The wooden dolls are made from birch,
alder, aspen (poplar) trees and linden trees. Making a set of dolls is a very  long process with first cutting out the
 different sizes on a lathe machine, then allowing the wood to dry; then painting - all by hand  - a very laborious process. Therefore one can appreciate the value of a set of dolls. The word Matroshka to the non-Ukrainian speaking is difficult to remember/pronounce and people simply call them call the  wooden dolls 
 "nesting dolls", "babuska" (grandmother) dolls. Matroshka -
comes from matir (Ukr. for mother) - many mothers -  there are many interpretations for these sweet innocent dolls -they are adored world-wide. The Matroshka image is so popular that artisans have used
 their talents to create to create many variants (variations) - matroshka pens/pencils, matroshka keychains,
magnets, matroshka fabrics and the list can go on. 
People purchase the doll sets to give away as gifts or to add to their collections.
